Symposium Description
Dr. Öngür’s symposium will provide a review of relevant neurobiology and brain abnormalities in psychiatric conditions. Participants will learn an integration of neurobiology, brain abnormalities, and the current status of psychotropic drug treatment of major mental illnesses. The evidence base which informs appropriate treatment decisions will be applied to the understanding and treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Emphasis will also be placed on addressing the patient’s experience and perspective as a key ingredient in successful pharmacotherapy. Recognition and management of side effects and adverse outcomes as paramount concerns for patient adherence and functional recovery will be addressed. Participants will learn how to link current psychopharmacology recommendations with the neurobiology of major psychiatric conditions. Novel treatment approaches will also be addressed.
